Stretchable devices based on high-performance inorganic materials require the use of stretchable device designs such as wavy interconnects and kirigami structures, which sacrifices the device density to achieve stretchability. For applications that require high resolution in stretchable formats, including but not limited to electronic eyes and wide field-of-view cameras, the inorganic-based stretchable devices based on the device design strategy are thus not suitable. Another strategy to achieve stretchability is to construct the devices using intrinsically stretchable materials, but significant progress is required as devices based on these materials generally exhibit low electrical/optoelectronic performance as compared to the inorganic-based devices. In this seminar, I will first briefly discuss how the technological advancements have been made in the field of stretchable electronics Then, stretchable optoelectronic and electronic devices developed using device design approaches and intrinsically stretchable material approaches will be discussed, with emphasis on recent work that accomplished a stretchable photosensitive nanocomposite based on ternary combination of quantum dots, semiconducting polymer, and stretchable polymer. Also, a novel stretchable dielectric material that can be deposited using vacuum-deposition technique will be presented, which can be a game-changer in stretchable electronic devices in terms of low power operation and high electrical performance.
